Living Among the Dead: Cedar Grove & the Rural Cemetery Movement

This tour will explore Cedar Grove Cemetery while discussing its origins and development within the context of the Rural Cemetery Movement. Cedar Grove Cemetery was created in the years just before the Civil War when the United States was undergoing rapid societal changes and it was part of a larger movement aiming to transform the role of cemeteries. We’ll explore Cedar Grove’s origins, its founders and early contributors, its impact on New London, and the radical ways life overflowed into the space of the dead.
